Maternal and Child health nurse
(Temporary Replacement for 6 months)
ABOUT MENZIES:

of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and a leader in global and tropical research into life threatening illnesses, Menzies School of Health Research continues to translate its research into effective partnerships and programs in communities across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
SUMMARY OF THE POSITION:
Menzies Timor-Leste works with the Timor-Leste Government and partners to strengthen the health
system’s response to infectious diseases challenges. The work focuses on strengthening capacity
in clinical, surveillance and laboratory settings. Health research is also conducted on various health
issues, with the results contributing to evidence-based practice.
Menzies has an office in Dili, Timor-Leste with a large team of Timorese and expatriate staff
employed in-country, supporting the delivery of capacity-building and research projects. A number
of projects are being implemented through the office under a Memorandum of Understanding
between Menzies and the Ministry of Health, and Menzies and the Ministry of Agriculture and
Fisheries. The Timor-Leste office is supported by Menzies Corporate Services, the GTH Division
and Timor-Leste program staff based in Australia.
The Maternal and Child Health nurse will work on the Fleming Fund Country Grant to Timor-Leste
together with the newly established Maternal Health team, which includes the Neonatal health
Technical Advisor and Maternal health Technical Advisor.
The focus of the Fleming Fund Country Grant to Timor-Leste is to strengthen the surveillance
systems for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), antimicrobial use (AMU).
The position will be based in Dili, Timor-Leste.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following key responsibilities are not exhaustive and may include others as directed by the Project
Manager at Menzies School of Health Research Timor-Leste Office.
The Maternal and Child health nurse will work closely with the Technical Advisors to support work on
neonatal and maternal health, focusing on infectious diseases at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares
(HNGV) and Community Health Centres (CHC) in Dili.
Specific responsibilities will include:
1. Support the research and quality improvement work focusing on neonatal sepsis;
– Data collection for neonatal sepsis study
– Support training on blood culture collection
– Support teaching POCQI (WHO online quality improvement tool for teaching QI in Maternal / Neonatal health)
– Continual use of QI (problem identification, problem analysis and Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles) throughout the project.
2. Support the research and quality improvement work focusing on maternal health;
– Contribute to the design and development of future maternal health study/ies
– Data collection for future maternal health study/ies
– Support training on sample collection for future maternal health study/ies
– Support teaching POCQI (WHO online quality improvement tool for teaching QI in Maternal / Neonatal health)
– Continual use of QI (problem identification, problem analysis and Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles) throughout the project.
3. Provide professional development training for Menzies staff on Maternal and Child health as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Midwifery or Nursing
Essential Criteria:
1. Strong communication skills including proficiency in oral and written Tetun and English language.
2. Good time management skills, with ability to work efficiently while maintaining accuracy and quality.
3. Initiative, good judgement and strong problem-solving skills, strong work ethic and flexibility with work tasks.
4. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, other Microsoft Office applications and electronic data collection systems.
5. Willingness to learn, continuously improve and respond positively to feedback and supervision.
6. Evidence of high levels of emotional intelligence
7. Flexibility and ability to work well in a team and independently.
8. Hold or be able to obtain a National Police Clearance certificate.
9. Understanding of and commitment to Menzies values, the principles of Equal Opportunity and contributing to a safe and inclusive workplace 3 Desirable Criteria:
a. Knowledge of terminology related to health, laboratories and antimicrobial resistance.
